History and philosophy of the Guess brand

Guess was founded in 1981 in Los Angeles by four brothers: Maurice, Armand, Georges and Paul Marciano. Originally from France, they moved to the United States in pursuit of the “American Dream”. The brand’s name was inspired by a McDonald’s advertisement bearing the slogan “Guess what’s in our new Big Mac?”, a distinctly American detail that would become central to the identity of a brand whose style from the outset embraced the freedom and diversity of American culture.

Guess made its debut with an innovative approach to classic denim. The product that brought the brand into the spotlight was the Marylin Jeans – a pair of jeans designed to accentuate the feminine silhouette.
