However, the icon was truly born in 1963 when Karl Birkenstock launched the Madrid model – the first gymnastic sandals with elastic carved insoles which are the foundation for today’s sector of comfortable orthopedic footwear. Since that moment, the brand constantly designs new innovative models of comfortable shoes for the home and for the outside.
